Most Common Problems on Automatic Voltage Regulator
Hi there, today my post is about automatic voltage regulator. What goes into your mind when you hear the term automatic voltage regulator? Yes, its automatically regulate voltage, right? So how this automatic voltage regulator affects our computer? Actually this device does not affect computers directly. This device does not speed up our computer but it protects our computer parts from easily burned during voltage fluctuation. Also it provides step down power for devices from Japan or the US. If we live in Asia and plug this devices, this action could be a disaster to this devices. In Japan and US voltages are in 110volts to 120volts only while in Asia most devices runs in 220volts. So, this AVR is not only for voltage fluctuation but also as step down power.
So, what are the most common problems of automatic voltage regulator? I have here the list of problems that we might encounter if we have a defective automatic voltage regulator.
Defective plug mostly can be spotted while plugging, there is a spark and automatic regulator voltage (AVR) unit turns off .
2. Defective Switch
Defective switch can be recognized if you switch on the AVR. If there is a small explosion inside the switch or the unit starts a second only, then eventually turns off after a sec or couple of sec.
Problem Solution: Replace with a high quality switch, soldering task is needed on this solution.
3. Blown Fuse
Blown fuse is the most easiest to detect. If your AVR has an indicator and if plug no indication of power running you could already suspect for blown fuse. The fuse holder is usually at the back inside the round black knob. Other manufacturer integrate the fuse in the plug or in the power cord socket like in the case of uninterruptible power supply or UPS.
Problem Solution: Replace the blown fuse only and no soldering required.
4. Loose Socket/Outlet.
This problem sometimes is difficult to distinguish, you could misinterpret this trouble as defective switch or defective plug. The best thing to do is to open the AVR unit. Most low quality or old AVR has this trouble. The AC socket at the back of the AVR frequently loose from solder this because of overheating between plugged devices or poor quality solder from factory.
Problem Solution: Resolder the wires on the plug sockets at the back of your AVR. Soldering task is required in this solution.

the seller said that it would be compatible for my xbox360 which is 110v and 120 watts
So i bought but upon testing it at home
After maybe 10 minutes the avr light went off and it smoked
It turns out to be that he fooled me that avr's 110v was only 50 watts
So is it possible that my xbox360 console itself is destroyed???

Good day! It is hard to determine if your Xbox360 was destroyed. There are components on our devices that are tough enough to withstand electrical current. Hope you did not miss to plug it in 220 volts receptacle.
ReplyDeleteThere are ways to know if your unit was destroyed.
1. If smoke was out from your unit.
2. You can smell burned parts form the unit.
3. Plug it again on known good 110 volts source.

Thnks this is informative..my question is how would i know the last picture on your #4 loose socket.but not the socket is damaged?is tha generator?i duno.
ReplyDelete#4 is a loose solder connection on the socket. inspect the wires if properly solder on the socket pins. Sometimes socket pins are broken due to poor quality materials.
DeleteOh it is transformer. How would i know that this is burned or broken?
ReplyDeleteUse multi-tester if close to zero or zero ohm reading, it is probably shorted or burned. Also, burned components usually comes with burned smells.

DeleteWhats the problem with my avr, our current voltage range from 160-195v, but the avr is not having 229v output. Stavol 3kva
ReplyDeleteWhen you open the Stavol or Servo Motor Type AVR you will see coil that looks like a motor besides the coil you will find two carbon rods like a selector, when the power goes down the coil rotates to adjust voltage to stabilize its output same when the power goes up. Try cleaning the the sides of the coil with a sandpaper the one that touches the carbon rods. Hope this will help solve your problem.
